Yeah, I know. The month is almost over... Oh well better late than never!!
I am struggling with this subject. I don't know how much to tell her at this age. She is also completely unaware at this point in her life that people with darker sink were/are treated any different. I hate to ruin this innocence, but I also know in order to celebrate all that African Americans have overcome we have to discuss where they started from.
We are going to discuss slavery and what it meant to black people. I have some good games from history.org. They discuss easy things like difference in clothing and why the slaves had to dress the particular why they did.
I also went to Better World and printed out some famous African Americans and will read their quote, discuss what they meant and she can color. (FYI I picked out the standards, MLK Jr and Rosa Parks. I also choose modern public figures that M would recognize, President Obama and Oprah Winfrey... and for good measure I put ion Jimi Hendrix just because I can!!!)
Bible Time: We will read Genesis and discuss creation. I will emphasize how God created everything and EVERYONE, there for God loves us all. No matter our skin color.
And as always she will be reading her Bob Books and working on some math problems. Last week she did her math in Spanish!!
I am looking for some good books to incorporate in this weeks lesson plan and some good soul food recipes. I will update when I find some.

FYI: This went OK. I probably got more in depth that she could process. She LOVED the history.org stories. She colored the print outs, could have cared less about who was on them... Oprah now has a green nose and purple hair. Oh well, it is a start!!
