I thought with the New Year this week it would be the prefect time to do a unit on time. We have a What Time Is It? game to begin telling time. I also plan on making a year long calender (time and ideas permitting otherwise I might just buy one and let her put stickers on the important dates). That will be part of her craft. I have also bought a small learning clock to use... And made some worksheets from Time for Time
Math/Science: Making cookies. I am also going to have her set/keep the time for the cookies. Yes, eventually I will do more than cooking for math & science.
Book: Time for Tom I also have someplace in this house a school aged bible/ read a verse a day that I plan on starting Jan 1. Hopefully. That would require me to A) locate said bible, B) remember to read it each day.
I got a nice workbook and some flash cards for Christmas! We'll incorporate those in somehow.
Sidenote: Husband has started clearing out the basement and (re)organizing it for a classroom! Yay. We are looking for some nice storage cabinets to put down there since storage in every inch of this house is lacking...

Hi, you have lots of good ideas. I can remembering learning to tell time. I remember having a hard time with the "quarter" of an hour (which probably isn't even taught anymore) I thought a quarter of an hour should be 25 minutes like in a dollar. It made sense then LOL.
ReplyDeleteWell, learning time is a lot harder of a concept to grasp than I imagined! We are still working on whole hours, today I am going to try and introduce 1/2 hour. Anything beyond that is just going to overwhelm us both!
ReplyDeleteOn the up side she is getting the concept of fractions! Which is more than I can say about me since I just had to have husband help me with some... oops!
Maybe you could work with pennies for minutes. I think that is how I finally learned the difference.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of fractions . . . in sewing, fractions are used a lot, even more so in quilting. I have a new quilt pattern, and instead of cutting one block at a time I want to cut a long strip and sub-divide, it's a lot faster. Well, a 4 7/8 inch block was listed and I multiplied what I thought and ask DH if that was right, and he was just looking at me sorta with his mouth half open. He said I lost him half way through what I was talking about. Sooo, I did the math another way and came out with the same answer, so I guess it was right, but have to wait and see. I know .75 is 3/4", but never worked with 7/8" before - 4 7/8 is only 1/8 less than 5" and that's how I figured it the second time using the 5" and then subtracted the several 1/8's that I had to get rid of.
Happy New Year, and I hope it will be the best yet. Love to all . . .
